Closing voice-over by Ian Holm?

I recently saw this film for the first time on DVD. At the film's conclusion in the jungle, I was told there was supposed to be a final voice-over by Ian Holm's character. However, this was not in the version I saw.

Can anyone confirm whether this voice-over existed in the original version and if so, why it would have been cut from the DVD release?

reply

Yes, I remember seeing it in the movies and on VHS growing up. Ian holm said something to the degree of how greystoke wanted jane to go with him, but the jungle would be much too dangerous for her.

I don't know why they'd cut that out though...

reply

That's puzzling. I have a DVD copy, and the voiceover is intact.

reply

Yes this definately exists, it was on the copy I taped off TV about 15 years ago.
From memory it goes something like this:

"John implored Jane to go with him, but of course she could not - how would she ever survive? As we watched him disappear for the last time into the jungle, I could only hope that one day, the world would turn in their favour and they would find another course for their love......".

That's paraphrased by me but is very close to the closing voice-over by Holmes.
