I suspect James Fox must have had his role cut to the bone.

The Greystoke sections of the film do feel like they could have been a little more substantial so as to even out the balance of the film which as it stands for me is really dominated by the stuff in Africa. The parts that most noticeably feel incomplete to me though was the very beginning with the immediate cut to the wreck on the beach, and then the narration explaining how the Captain had gone off in search of help rather than actually attempting to show that happening (Griffiths was a notable enough actor at the time for his part to not have simply been that all too short part with Lady Clayton, I can't imagine that was all they hired him for). I'd loved to have seen more of the Clayton's on the island early on, but I can understand the want to get as quickly into the heart of things as possible.
