He's a professor hitting on a college girl. My parents were young so he looked old to me. I never felt comfortable with his sexual advances on her and punishing a man who even had apparent psychic ability, all while trying to get with her.

And he wouldn’t stop hitting on Dana, despite her obvious protests. He basically was Peppy Le Pew, a cartoon that also made me feel uncomfortable as a child.

shareI say I've heard of him, but I've seen the cartoons, which I believe were made by the same people as Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. A typical example, from memory, is Pepe suddenly being attracted by a female animal (probably another skunk or whatever) whom he would chase relentlessly with what he perceived to be romantic overtures, before finally forcing himself on them in a tight embrace, which he considered to be a lover's embrace, whilst they obviously looked very uncomfortable and were desperate to escape his clutches.
I'm saying all this from memory, as I haven't seen one of his cartoons for decades now, but I can see now why so many would object to them now, and him.

But the purpose wasn't just to get laughs, it was to establish Venkman's character, as someone who didn't take his job or his field seriously, and who really, REALLY, needed some character adjustment!
Venkman and Stanz weren't who kids thought of as 'professors' stereotypically.although I'm sure many did hit on their students/subjects in real life. Venkman and Staz were who professors were in real life flawed and or human.
Egon is the hollywoodsuperhero version of a college professor. impeccably groomed, does not smoke, does not hit on anybody. But on the other hand, I'm sure he also locked the door on his students and did not let them in if they came late. He was the one who would flunk you. I had a professor like him and these guys are great in the real world, but they don't know how to teach....way too picky.
Actually, did the film ever establish whether they were professors, adjuncts, or research fellows? Obviously, they weren't tenured! Not that it matters to the story, the whole point of the college scenes were to get some laughs, establish their characters, and launch them into the ghostbusting business.

Agreed, and Egon would have given the toughest grades allowable, and he'd have told the curiosity-seekers or those who wanted an easy A to drop the class and get out of the field.
Egon would have the most complaints lodged against him, with Peter being a distant second. Next to none for Ray...

My offence wasn't shaped by social perceptions, but my own innate moral compass. I knew he was purposefully lying to her. I knew he was physically punishing someone who did nothing wrong. Both are immoral.

Everybody acts badly sometimes, or at least secretly wants to.
Watching these characters act badly and be flawed only makes them more relatable and endearing.
