Did MacDonald and his legal counsel really think that an acquittal was definite?

Re-watched this for the first time in years. Upon this re-watch, I was struck by how MacDonald and his legal team were like 95 percent sure that the criminal trial would result in MacDonald being acquitted. I mean, the movie showed MacDonald (during the deliberation phase) discussing his return to the west coast and having a victory party aboard the Queen Mary - I know MacDonald is a textbook narcissist, but was he really that confident that he would be acquitted? I thought this a bizarre part of the movie

I have no doubt he is that delusional. If his team believed that, then he has a case for incompetent counsel. Of course, they had to put on a united front for the public. That was probably hyped for the movie.
