Some of it may be chalked up to Lynch's quirkiness, though Sting definitely fits the part. Was he added to give the film some pop culture cred? Maybe. Now Toto is one that's hard to explain. A band best known for mid-tempo rock scoring a space opera? Makes absolutely no sense. But for my money they crated a sweeping score that captures the grandeur of the story perfectly.
I certainly don't know the motivation behind both decisions, but I applaud both. I think Sting did great in his role, amidst an overall excellent cast in a less-than-performing film. I am also not always a fan of some modern band doing a soundtrack just for the sake of their popularity, but Toto earns it. I think the soundtrack is amazing.
Pretty sure Sting was at the height of his popularity in '84. Necessary? I think he was an inspired choice and he ultimately fit the role. As for Toto, they were more of an odd choice than Sting but the score they provided is easily one of the film's strengths.
The thing about Toto is that they were a bunch of MAJOR session artists before they formed as a band.
Although a lot of people may not have liked their main musical catalogue, the thing is, they were all fantastic musicians. Instead of scoring with a symphony playing, they did the equivalent with a rock band.
I myself really enjoy the Dune music that Toto did... sure, it's 80s music for sure, but that decade did have way more good songs than the last one did. Beiber? Gimme a break!
Lynch is an odd ball from the start so surprised no. Sting was good but he tends to over act most of the time. I enjoy the movie though and saw it back in the day at the theater. All the voice over stuff is stupid and gets on my nerves. Its not needed and i'm sure this was one of Lynchs' issues.
I'm not a fan of Sting as a musician. He can play a mean bass, but I just don't like the music. And yet I don't dislike him at all because he was in Dune.
