Question about Scott Glenn's character (spoilers)

Late in the movie, Scott Glenn's character Michael Boyle was on board an American aircraft carrier. Nuclear weapons were exchanged. An American nuclear depth charge was dropped on a Russian sub. (Glenn's character shouted to a naval officer who denied what was going on, "Whatta ya call that mushroom cloud!?") An American destroyer is nuked. After that, you see and hear Glenn's character on the bridge of the carrier, then the picture goes blank. Did something happen to the carrier?

Probably the entire carrier group was nuked or atleast Nimitz was damaged from the destroyer being hit by a nuke.

When you see the image frozen, there is a sound of an explosion in the background. I assume by that circumstance that the Nimitz was destroyed by a nuclear torpedo fired from one of the submarines that got through the picket ships.
