Mirror in the Stairwell

1. What caused the mirror effect in the stairwell of the building where the first murder occurs? Is it just a highly reflective building next door?

2. How did they do the special effect with the mirror so that Jack Flack had no reflection?

3. How did they hide the camera and all of the film equipment in that shot so they didn't show up in the reflection?

Any thoughts on this? I always thought it was a pretty weird thing to put in film without any explanation at all especially when almost everything else in the film is explained well for the intended juvenile audience.

The mirror effect is pretty typical of window glass in many situations. Nothing amazing there.

Not sure what they may have done to pull off the missing reflection of JF. I need to watch it again but it could simply be Dabneys position to the glass or they could have used some sort of optical effect like a Traveling Matte to add him to the shot later. Sorta like what they did in the movie Multiplicity with Michael Keaton.

From what I recall the angle of the shot from the camera which was behind and just offset to the right of Henry was such that the equipment would not show in the reflection, though Henry could probably see the equipment in the reflection because he was right on top of the glass. Try this, stand directly in front of a mirror or highly reflective window and have a friend stand behind you just off to the side of the window. I bet the friend would not be able to see their reflection in the glass but you would be able to see yours and theirs.

The camera is clearly visible in the identical shot on the other floor. It is behind a darkly tinted window with a small hole cut for the lens. I'm sure on an hd release you could see it more but if you know what to look the camera is right in the center of the frame.

As far as the effect where you can't see Dabney - I'm not sure. I think they just angled the mirror to barely cut Dabney out of the reflection.

I think its a really cool effect in a movie we wouldn't normally see this level of in camera fx, but nowadays it'd all be compositing in the computer - definitely not as fun!

supposed to be a mirrored building next to the tower they were in... however... the exterior tower shots reveal no mirror building next to that one. also..anyone know which building it is? for some reason i don't recall seeing it in san antonio a few months ago

I would say that since it was 2 separate windows, the one with Davey in it had a mirror and the window with Jack Flack was a real window so he wouldnt reflect.

The window reflection is actually impossible. Davey should appear to be another 50 feet away, a tiny distant reflection. It's a completely fake view.

As I recall, I think someone else caught it in this thread: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087065/board/nest/36186156
