Difference between then and now

Kids had imagination back then. Nowadays kids are so wrapped up texting on their cell phones and on their twitter accounts, that they don't have a sense of adventure anymore.

Also, in this day and age, I'm not so sure shooting at a child in a PG rated kids fantasy film would fly anymore. Furthermore, the Jack Flak character probably wouldn't be allowed to smoke by todays standards either.

So true, and also the part where Rice describes how he's going to blow the kid's kneecaps off and shoot him in the stomach. Don't think I've ever seen anything like that in another so-called "family" movie.

I'm happiest...in the saddle.

This movie is full of reminders why life in the 80's was worlds better then life in this PC day and age.

People our age always have something to say about the state of the current generation.

We talk about these damn kids and their cell phones
They talked about us like those damn kids and their video games
Before that it was those damn kids and their TV
....those damn kids and their rock music
....those damn kids and their big band music

Im sure at some point it was said those damn kids and their horse pulled plows.

Back in my day we didnt even have those fancy wheels you have. We had to pull rocks up to our caves by hand uphill and we were better off for it :)

Well but it's different. I really do believe that the '80s or thereabouts truly did end a golden era. Mankind has really launched into a new era - the information age. This level of change has never before been seen - with perhaps the next closest thing being the industrial age (which doesn't even compare in scope).

Also, in this once great country, c'mon kanye west and beyonce are looked at as luminaries. Tolerance is out of control - it's just really spinning down the toilet.

Good points, it's odd looking back at 80s movies now and at how much balls they displayed when portraying kids (even in the Goonies) that they simply couldn't pull off today. I have to think that, despite the fantasy premise behind a lot of these scripts, they actually captured a more accurate portrayal of how kids act.

You can see this a lot in Speilberg's 80s work as well.

I was watching this the other day and thinking the exact same thing! Even if they wanted to remake this film they would either have to age up the kids or nix the amount of gun usage on the kids.

I loved this movie when I was a kid, but mostly because I had a huge crush on Henry Thomas.

Here's a comparison of a different sort:

compare the pic below to 42:22 in the movie:

You can see they've changed the river edge stonework to widen the river at that point.

Notice the trees have survived.

The people look very different but I think the movie crowd was all screened extras, so it's difficult to compare.

Kids running around with plastic firearms without orange tips was common in the early 80s. Kids running around with firearms can get shot.

Kids then were trusted on their own and had fun playing.
Kids now are a target of pedophiles or mental defects who can not have kids think it is ok to take someone else all because the US is weak when
it comes to punishment.

So many things are diff. it would take many GB of space to list.

as someone who grew up in the 80s, i can remember being able to get on my bike and ride across town and stay away from home most of the day.

Parents shouldn't smoke around children. That is a vast improvement over the pre-PC age.

it would be pretty much like Home Alone, if made today.
