What if the Cratcits ' yearly prayers summoned the angels who visited Scrooge. Much like the townspeople getting Heaven's attention at the beginning of "It's a Wonderful Life".

While the Cratchit's prayers were earnest, they were also generic in nature, while the Bedford Falls townsfolk (what a great word) prayed earnestly and specifically for divine intervention for George Bailey.
