This kind of comment is typical of the kind of paranoia and signs of a guilty conscience that A Christmas Carol provokes in some people. A Christmas Carol is not a political argument. It is about a man's discovery of the benefits of not living in fear and cynicism. Fear of the genorisity of his own spirit which he has denied for years due to self pity and festering resentment. Scrooge's position and wealth were not unique. The portly gentlemen visit him not because it was rare for the well off to be charitbale at that time of year but because it was in fact "more than usually desirable".
Inevitably though, some commentators become defensive of free-enterprise and minimal state sanctioned social welfare. I wonder why that is when these things are never specifically attacked or denounced?
