Christmas Carol

A Christmal Carol with George C. Scott is my favorite Christmas movie of all. I never get tired of watching it. George C. Scott is the best Scrooge of all. Wonderful movie.

Completely agree. A timeless version of a timeless story. Scott rules - he was one of the true greats, and in this film, the view sees him at the pinnacle of his acting abilities. Not to mention the whole production is startlingly well done.

I love Scott. And I do have fondness for this version because of his presence, not to mention the art design and some of the other prefromances, notably Ewar Woowar as the second spirit.

IT doesn't sit at the top of my christmas list for one reason though-Scott. Love him though I do, it displays that element of Scott's way of working in that he doesn't share a screen very well. A lot of the time he looks as if he's acting for himself (not only true of this movie), as if the other actor isn't there at all. Now that may be appropriate for this story, if you consider that the visitation of the spririts is all in Scrooge's mind, but I feel that it undersells the drama slightly as it's harder to immerse yourself in it if Scrooge doesn't appear to be taking it all that seriously until the very end.

Nevertheless. This movie is in my top three Christmas Carols. Just pipping the Muppets, god bless them.

I see what you mean, yet it works for me because the character of Scrooge (once he got past his first blush of love for Belle) was so incredibly selfish. I've known people like that; they only care about themselves to the point that even when you're with them you feel like you're alone.

That's a good argument. A friend of mine pointed out that the very same quality Scott displays in this movie is what makes his performance in Patton so formidable. And Patton is a very self centred character.

You could say the same about Scrooge but I've always liked how other peformers, Stewart especially, conveyed Scrooge as damaged in this way from the very outset of the story, not just when he see how he was treated as a boy etc.
