Was this shot on film or video?

I recently saw this film on AMC HD and the picture quality was absolutely horrendous. Was this shot on video (which I could then understand - HD would simply be impossible) or was this shot on film and AMC HD was just being cheap?

Film.

We watched our DVD last night and the picture quality is excellent but not high-def on our Blu-ray player. I think our player "upgrades" the appearance a bit, as even non-HD movies look better than they used to on our old player.

If it was shot on film then the resolution is much higher than HDTV or Blu-Ray even if it was made in 1940. This is why you can now watch The Wizard of Oz in HD. Hence, based on the picture quality, it's obvious AMC simply chose to use the standard def version on their HD network. Anything shot on video is different - many 1980 and 1990s TV shows for instance - but not all. Seinfeld was shot on film - this is why you can now watch HD Seinfeld on TBS. Now though, many shows are shot on HD video.

From the looks of things, the movie was shot on film - BUT edited/broadcast on videotape. Some of the dissolves and the appearance of glowing items like candles imply videotape post-production.

Thus, the movie may ONLY exist as a "hi-def" videotape ("hi-def" for its time). Thus, trying to get an HD version from the original film footage is as likely as snowballs in July.

You seem to have NO idea what you're talking about.

This was shot on film...Period. It was shown theatrically in the U.K....on film.

Obviously, when this originally aired on tv in the U.S. a videotape was used for broadcasting purposes, but the DVD release is certainly from original FILM elements and not from old 80's video sources. Since it was shown theatrically I really doubt an 80's production like this would have had any video post-production....the quality would suffer. Also, "hi-def" simply didn't exist at the time...later in the 80's, yes, but even then the quality was nowhere near today's "hi-def".

And to those partaking in this discussion, what in the world difference does it make?

If this had been shot with 1984 quality video, it would probably look so incredibly dated! Thankfully they used film instead!
