The Bounty Is Now A Tourist Cruise Ship

From IMDb Trivia:

The "Bounty" specially built for the movie had, for a number of years, been used as a tourist cruise ship at Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia until 2007 when it was sold to HKR International Limited. The ship is now on Lantau Island in Discovery Bay, Hong Kong and continues to function as a tourist cruise charter.

It would be interesting going on that ship. As I'm walking around the deck, I'd think, "Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins and Liam Neeson were once here."

MGM commissioned a near replica of The Bounty for the 1962 version (with Marlon Brando). It was slightly longer than the original to accommodate an engine. That same ship was used in many other movies including The Bounty (1984), Master & Commander, and Pirates of the Caribbean. As you pointed out, it now lies at the bottom of the ocean.

The Brando version of the movie was such a huge success that a year after the movie was released the ship made stops all along the west coast of North America and hundreds of thousands of people waited in line to see it.

I got all of this from a series of mini-documentaries that aired on TCM.

I've been on it when I was in Sydney about 15 years ago (crikey!). It was fantastic actually, they did a bit of theatre every time it sails off with one of the deck hands falling in / missing a rope and having to swim (struck me as a bit of a safety risk right in Sydney Harbour). You motor out to the head of the bay, have a buffet meal, can explore a bit of the ship (apart from the working kitchen) everyone has their meal sitting on the deck or down below (bit awkward as there's no tables you just perch on something). Then coming back they cut the motors and went on wind power as the sun goes down. They let me wear a tricorn hat and have a go at the helm. So peaceful on the light wind, listening to the creaks and canvas, opera house to your left and the bridge up ahead. Great stuff!!

Well, hey, guess what, guys and gals: You can still walk where Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson, and Daniel Day-Lewis walked.

The Bounty replica built for the 1962 movie is the replica ship that sank in Hurricane Sandy. A completely different ship. Quite sad to see it go, true, but it's not the ship built and used for this movie.

The replica used in this movie is alive and well, and still a tourist destination in Hong Kong:
