After 20 Years I've Decided: This Movie is Trash

That isn't meant as an insult, because sometimes trash is the only thing that will slake my appetite. But I can remember a time (when I was much younger, obviously) when this film seemed like pretty sophisticated stuff; and now, I can't help but laugh at the garish 80s horndoggery, gory sensationalism, and sheer implausibility of the plot.

All that said, I don't mind having the DVD in my collection, just for kicks.

Anyone feel the same way?

Yeah, I agree, this film has not dated very well. I can handle the eighties culture just fine, but when I see characters act counter intuitive and get into dangerous or even lethal situations, I find myself unwilling to suspend disbelief.

Brian DePalma clearly does not like women, I can see is misogyny all over this movie. It starts to wear thin when watching all the contrivances in this movie designed to put women in the most brutal situations.

On the plus side, I did enjoy the Los Angeles locations which were fun to look at during the film.

Semi-agree on the Russ Meyer reference.

Yeah, and also take away the magnificent cinematography and the irreverent, smart sense of humor and... what do we have? What do we have indeed. No De Palma movie, that´s for sure.

I just watched this for the first time and the word "trash" never came to mind. I loved all of it--LA scenery, acting, plot twists, nudity, chases, and peeping Tom behavior. The only thing that bothered me was how Mr. Revelle was able to keep Mrs. Revelle away from the house when Holly was putting on her show. But perhaps he just knew she would be home late on certain days.

Yeah, its somewhat trashy :)

I think the film could be discounted as trash but really, if you watch the way the film is shot, if you can appreciate the mood and the beautiful lighting and music there is something very well crafted here.
I live in LA and I think the film captured LA in the 80's very well, much like The Morning After with Jane Fonda, which is another great film to watch.
I also think that there is a loneliness captured very well in the film which is punctuated by the sort of dreamy, yearning music.
I don't know, I've grown to like this film much more over the years. I think I like it better now than when I first saw it.

Trashy as hell but i enjoyed every minute of it. I personally rather liked the 80s setting. Its like a time capsule.

I see many references that the film is "so 80's". I've never viewed it that way. Other than the MTV like scene when Jake is appearing in the porn movie, there's not much in the film that doesn't translate to other eras. The clothing is certainly not that far out of step of what would be worn today. Other than the music in the porn movie, the majority of the film is scored with symphonic music that could have been written in the 1930's. Cars? Nothing 80's esque here. The primary vehicle is Jake's well worn 1967 Camaro. The Indian's Bronco is better known for the 1994 O. J. Simpson chase. Upscale malls still look pretty much the same today. I don't get it. Maybe has to do with that I was 31 when the film came out. Maybe if one was a teen at that time, the 80's characteristics would be more apparent.

Yes I feel exactly the same way, I actually gave it a 2, which is the lowest I've ever given any movie I think.
It was just too bloddy weird for me but I could get why some people might like it.
