Spoiler! Why did Sam take the money and hit Gloria while Jake watched?

When Sam knew that Jake would be watching, he went in to the bedroom, stole (or took) money from the safe and then proceeded to hit his beautiful wife.

Why would Sam do that? He was trying to build an alibi for himself, so why do something that Jake could tell the police that would increase suspicion back on himself (that being Sam)? I don't get it.

The way it was supposed to work was Sam would kill the wife and make off with some jewelry, etc. (to collect on insurance) - all under the guise of the Indian being the culprit AND there being a witness to the whole thing.

What Sam didn't count on was that Jake would figure out he had been setup. It was a fluke that Jake happened to see Holly in some porn video ad and realize she was "the body" he had been watching.

Maybe he didn't think Jake would "tune in," as it were, in the middle of the night while his wife was sleeping? Maybe he thought once she was covered up and not dancing/touching herself, Jake wouldn't bother to watch?

Honestly, it is really bad luck, that the five minutes Sam was up here just happened to be the five minutes where Jake was bored and decided to check out the girl in the window again. Jake didn't see Holly leave or Gloria return home, either (which I always wondered about, actually: where was Gloria while that was going on? She wasn't out with her husband--at least not that first night--because he was with Jake, and it was awfully late for shopping or whatever, wasn't it?).

This awesome flick was on last night (but it was on This TV, so it was edited a bit), and I turned it on right at the above-mentioned part.

It was obvious to us that the guy was Sam (he a very distinctively shaped proflie, for one thing). Plus, Sam had a hat on, so it was a bit of a disguise. Jake obviously didn't know it was Sam.

I think you need to follow the plot a little more closely. The entire scenario is based on Jake thinking the husband and the Indian are separate people, and Sam has no affiliation in the murder at all. Jake has no reason to believe Sam is the husband. He's just a guy Jake met who's letting him stay at a sublet.
