I saw the movie when it came out and watched it again last nite and came away with the same conclusion. I think the body double reference is not about about Meg Ryan (that is too obvious) the body double is the reality of the murder was replaced by a making of a movie. So, I believe the body double was the movie as you can see the whole cast standing around at the end.

...filming ANOTHER movie. I liked that notion too, but they wouldn't be filming two things at the same time, methinks. Holly Budy was probably there because she ended up befriending Jake, after everything got sorted out. The rest was just the crew and cast for Vampire's Kiss.
