Just noticed huge goof

I've loved this movie for years. Watching it yesterday I noticed when Mozart leaves to play at an outdoor concert a piano is playing on the soundtrack while he is sitting outdoors playing at a harpsichord!

Never noticed this before.

reply

Hahaha. Google "fortepiano"

reply

True, but notice the rich sound of the piano soundtrack. There is no way it would have sounded like that. But...I love the movie.

reply

I don't know if I'd classify that as a "huge" goof, but "there it is" as Emperor Joseph would say.

reply

I think it qualifies as a goof, but no it's not a huge one.

reply

I just noticed something as well: Mozart and constanza leave to do a performance and have his piano in a carriage/cart or whatever. However, when the maid/salieri look at Mozart's secret work, the piano is back right where it was before.

a lot of musicians have more than one of a given type of instrument

if I take a guitar somewhere, a person coming into my house would still find a guitar

His apartment wasn't big enough to have another piano where we didnt seen it...

reply

what's to say there weren't rooms or a storage area that we didn't see? what if he had a garage or something along those lines? do we know for certain that there was no such storage area?

reply

That's true. I never thought of that before. I had always thought it might be a blooper on the filmmakers part...:)

reply

it's certainly possible that it was an oversight, but plausible deniability and all...

cheers to you for not getting all bent in the face of dissent

And thanks for not doing the same to me, :)

No need to be snippy, you know. I was asking a reasonable question about bringing another piano to the concert when he already had one.

I imagine travel is hard on a piano, especially in a cart, on rough roads. Possibly he kept one piano at home, ready for immediate use, with another for taking on the road, maybe a sturdier one, which he would arrange to have re-tuned on arrival?

reply

You consider a harpsichord that sounds like a piano a huge goof. Once you get past Mozart dictating the Requiem to Salieri, all goofs are small potatoes.

reply

you are thinking of today's grand pianos. instruments were smaller back then, harsichord is smaller than a piano. I will have to see the movie I don't remember that part.

reply

I think the goof is yours my friend. They showed the fortepiano - which makes it an accurate visual representation. The movie is a celebration of Mozart's music. I don't belive that Forman wanted the listeners to suffer through a foretpiano version of the song.

A huge goof? You've watched it for years and never saw it? That means it's not a huge goof. Did you just enroll in some film study class where students, instead of watching and enjoying a move, pore over it freeze frame by freeze frame looking for gotchas? Now, if Wolfie came home and Constanza was watching television, that would be a huge goof.
