It would be lower on my list, but definitely in my top twenty (maybe ten). Do you prefer the theatrical cut, or the director's cut ? The theatrical cut is of course brilliant, but I think the added scenes in the DC do add something interesting. What do you think ?

I watched the director's cut once many years ago, and I cannot remember the exact additions. There was something about Salieri and Constanza Motzart (sexual favours?). I prefer the theatrical version.

I actually prefer the director's cut. I saw the theatrical cut first and then the DC, and I think the added scenes add to the film.
According to the commentary track, the main reasons why the scenes were cut, was because the film was already long enough. They weren't cut because they didn't work or because the director didn't want them. They were cut because a 3 hour period drama was too long for the studio. I think the film works slightly better with the added scenes, and to me they feel organic to the story.
I have trouble watching the theatrical cut since watching the DC. It feels like something's missing.

It's #1 for me... has been since seeing it in 1984 when I was 13 years old.
And this is coming from someone who was a typical teenager. I enjoyed all the iconic coming of age flicks in the 80's, all of the horror movies, the comedies, etc. but there was something about this movie which has always stuck.
I liked your list a great deal, only excluding Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Only suggestions I could think of would be "Dog Day Afternoon" with Al Pacino and "Lenny" with Dustin Hoffman, 2 of those actors lesser known films. Also, have you seen "All That Jazz" ?
shareIt's #2 on my list, too. Seen it about one million times since I was four, I know it back to front. It's #2 to Boogie Nights, and ahead of a bunch of other great ones: Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Godfather...
I prefer the original theatrical version. The deleted scenes don't belong in there, they don't add anything to the story. The one with Constanze and Salieri does help to explain why she is so angry to see him in their apartment at the end... but I think the deleted scene diminishes Salieri and is totally out of character for him. The other one, with Mozart and the dogs, just didn't add anything that we didn't know.
The only reason it's not rated higher on IMDB is because you can't trust the ratings on here, any more than you can on Amazon. Every time a Harry Potter, Star Wars, Hunger Games, etc. (whatever the latest craze is) comes out, it's immediately voted into the top ten. Blech. People are way too reactionary, and they basically already go into some of these movies ready to say it's great no matter what. This movie truly is.
Boogie Nights is on my list too unless I'm mistaken. I couldn't agree more about director's cut and new crazes in popular cinema. Nerly every Chris Nolen film gets exceptionally high ratings, whilst I think they are fairly solid don't deserve such grandios accolades on these boards. I wouldn't trust these ratings as far as I could throw them. I like the critics ratings on Red Tomotoes however and always hold them in high regards.
