a magnificent movie

I saw this film a few years ago and absolutely loved it. It was just perfect.
The music, the score the acting the costumes. One of the best movies ive ever seen.

I agree with you absolutely! I've seen it several times.

It's a regular watch for me. It's not accurate historically, but that doesn't take away fron the performances, music, sets, and film work.

This film is by far the finest of the films that won best picture in the 80's.

Not a high bar, but definitely agree with this.

It’s beautifully mounted and thoroughly entertaining. Great performances by F. Murray Abraham and Jeffrey Jones, although I find Tom Hulce as Mozart rather grating.

I agree with everything you said except for Tom Hulce, who I found pitch perfect and absolutely stunning in the role.

He didn’t work for me, but I think it was as much the concept as the execution. I just don’t think any actor could have portrayed Mozart as this whining idiot with a donkey laugh and made it work. I honestly think that the film’s (and presumably the play’s) one flaw is in its portrayal of this genius as a complete ninny.

That's exactly what made this movie special, and set it apart. The portrayal of Mozart as a genius with a gift from god, who had these major personal eccentricities, partying and being self destructive while at the same time being extremely disciplined. The movie is unimaginable without Hulce in the lead.

That the makers were creative enough to conceive of this concept, and brave enough to execute it is again, one of the major reasons this film is so great.

Agree: Abraham was astounding as young and old Salieri and Jones was fabulous. I thought Hulce was the only miscast.

Most people overlook the actor that played the priest. Not a big role I grant you but it's his *reaction* to Salieri's story that sells it. By dawn, that priest was thoroughly wrung out from emotion by Salieri's story - the emotional pain etched upon his face. If his reaction was unconvincing, it would have left any truth to Salieri's story in doubt. But the priest clearly believed it and was moved by it, and so were we.

I agree, it's a magnificent and gripping film! Back when it was shown frequently on TV, whenever I found it while flipping channels, I'd find myself hooked and watch all the way to the end. And it really is fantastic, with a charismatic leading performance, Mozart's best music all the way through, and a theme that has always been of deep interest to me. The movie isn't about music, it's about how insanely random and unfair life on Earth really is, and how frustrating reality is for anyone who expects order and justice to be a part of things.

Plus the music. Mozart's operas and other vocal works were his true claim to everlasting fame, IMHO his orchestral works were nothing special.

A beautiful production, but I don't care for the portrayal of Mozart as a giggling idiot. I would like to see a movie about the real Mozart.
