I'm a musician and a guitarist, so I have a pretty good guess as to these things, but I wanna know for sure. Was Steve really playing guitar in the band scenes? If he isn't, he's one of the best fakers I've ever seen, and since we already know he plays banjo, there's a good chance he knows how to play, but I was wondering if anyone knew for sure.

I do not know for sure, but it looked like his hands to me. It was very real "non-playing", as in no overdubs.
Good thing they didn't "get him into character" too much, or the bathroom scene would have been more realistic. Ouch! :-]
Steve can play jazz guitar, most likely, the guy can do anything.

Considering that he played the ukulele himself in The Jerk (and used to play it in his stand-up, if memory serves), and recently won an Emmy for his banjo playing, I think it's safe to say that was indeed him playing the guitar.
