I was only 2 years old when this started in 1984 so as a first time viewer, I have only been watching this for a few days on Hallmark Channel and I think they are on season 3 so the explanation of her whereabouts has been dealt with so I'm turning to you guys for help.

I haven't watched the show in a while, but I believe Sam's mother died. I think this was mentioned. You will also get that impression when the episodes with James Coco (Sam's maternal grandfather) air.
