Mona is Verbally ABUSIVE! (to Angela)

I love Mona's character (mostly), but I've been noticing that every other word she says is a total put-down towards Angela! I mean like ALL of the time. When I used to watch the show I remember her commenting on how uptight and inflexible she could be, but since I started watching it on Nik-at-Nite, I noticed how she just goes on and on and it's really annoying - anyone else think so?

They showed that she really loved her though.
The episode where Nick Milano (James Coco) died was especially touching.

Mona did make a lot of comments towards Angela about being uptight and inflexible because Angela was uptight and inflexible. I don't think Mona did it to be mean. I think she just wanted Angela to relax, open up a bit, have more fun in her life, and possibly open herself up to the possibility of a relationship with Tony.

Angela needed a Mona character to make her feel bad, in a way, because it made her more human. Plus it gives Mona laughs. If I were Angela, and real, having a mother that probably got (and gets) way more action than you, would be a little hard to take. No wonder Angela is so repressed and messed up.

I agree with what Isaac said and kkristians9 said. Mona's comments made Angela more human and it was funny to Mona.

Mona's comments kind of did go overboard sometimes but I also know that Mona truly loved Angela and that all her putdowns were just her way of getting Angela to loosen up and be able to laugh at herself and not take things so seriously. But she never meant any of the things she said because it was apparent how proud Mona was of Angela. I think with both Mona and Tony's help, Angela learned to relax more and have fun. Also, Mona was the one who always wanted Tony & Angela to get together, I always loved her for that! Basically Mona's character was supposed to be lighthearted and not to be taken seriously. She was great comedic relief, Katherine Helmond is a terrific actress!

I have to agree that Mona's comments to Angela are excessive and annoying at times. It's true that she shows how proud she is of her daughter and definitely seems to stand up for her if other people try to put her down. It's that whole problem of 'your family is allowed to treat you like crap because they're your family'. Some good natured ribbing is one thing, but the comments do seem mean at times (eg. 'look Angela, I had the misery of raising you....') and I agree with the first poster that it does get annoying because it seems to be 'all the time'. It's not that it's unrealistic, it's just mean sometimes. Mona is very confident which contrasts well with Angela's self-conscious 'ness'. I'd still have to agree that it makes Mona slightly less likable.

don't all mothers do that?

Well, Amgela was uptight and inflexible -- I mean she called Mona Mother and her son Johnathan not John, Johnnie or any type of nick name.)

Oh yeah but she was the heart of the show!

I never could stand Mona - always thought she was mean & disgusting. No wonder why Angela is uptight & had issues w/ her weight, w/ a mother that was constantly putting her down & butting into her life. Yes, mothers do tend to do that to an extent, but it gets old pretty quick watching it on tv. And when she's not judging Angela, she's making comments about sex & men, even when the kids are around which I find revolting. I do like it when she does spend time w/ the kids & takes them camping, etc., but for the most part I just don't like her!

Now it is called verbal abuse. Back in the day it was called parenting.
