Tony's money situation.

I've only recently started watching the show on Hallmark, but I just watched the episode where Samantha wants to join the ski club and go on a ski trip, but Tony doesn't have the money to pay for all of it. Why is that? I mean, if he played major league shouldn't he have at least SOME money?

I think he played major league ball a long time ago when Sam was little. But he probably didn't have a great contract (back in the late 70s to early 80s the average player's net salary was less than 100,000 a year but the minimum net salary was less than 61,000; you have to figure in the fact that he wasn't a superstar so he was prbably on the lower end of the scale) and as I recall his wife died of an illness after he stopped playing. Maybe he used up most of his savings caring for her while she was sick? Besides if he had so much money he wouldn't have been a housekeeper to find his kid a better school; he would have just bought a house in the better district.

plus there was the flashback episode where we saw the apartment Tony and Sam lived in before moving to CT. It was a really dumpy, needed major plumbing work done, one bedroom apartment with Tony sleeping on the couch.

He's the highest paid housekeeper in the neighborhood too (according to one of the early eps) - and he doesn't pay room and board - so his expenses are very limited - his money is always a mystery

Unless he's paying room and board along with meals, he shouldn't have too much to pay for aside from personal necessities. I don't remember back in the episode when he was hired if it was mentioned that he and Sam can just live in the house or if she charges him. Anyway - IMO, he should still have had the money for that ski trip. As the years advanced, he had the money for his car and a better wardrobe for him and Sam so I'm quite sure he wasn't paid bad.

I got the impression his playing career was brief. But he should have been eligible for a pension.

Was Tony married to Sam's mother? If he was he should have received insurance money when she passed away. And I believe she died in a car accident so accidental deaths pay more.
