Anyone else find Tony really annoying toward the end of the series?

Is it just me or did he get more and more whiney and weird towards the end of the show? I have always loved this show and have recently been watching it on Hallmark, and it's really standing out to me now for some reason. It started about the time he got his hair cut, lol.

Yep! I was just watching it and thinking he got really annoying and the show really went downhill about the time he and Angela got together. They definetely should have stopped it after season 7.

He got really goofy didnt he?

Funny. I just came on here to ask the the same question lol. I hate that he's like that. What happened during the end of this show? I can't believe they made his character act like that :( I love the show but come on!! I don't like how the last few seasons went. Sam dated a few guys that came and went with no explanation, mainly the cowboy. She left New Mexico, or Mexico or where she was and he says he's moving there in a few months , but never did. He was gone without any explanation. The same thing with Billy. Although I didn't like Billy anyway, he was there one day and gone the next lol. Crazy. And Sam marries that Hank guy.....what the heck?! I am disappointed in the end :(

In the context of the show, I think that was done to show how moving from The Bronx to upscale Connecticut was supposed to have changed Tony & Samantha. How Angela loosened up...Tony was less macho Italian guy.

Trust me, he got much worse towards the end of the series. He even lost his macho, tough guy characteristic for the most part. If you watch him in the beginning of the series (or even towards the middle) and then watch the end of the series he is almost a completely different person.

YES! He became a caricature of his character and the way he behaves around his awful haircut (as mentioned above), is where he really seems to act like a totally different person. The last couple seasons were weird like that in many ways, but I especially didn't like Sam suddenly marrying Hank and no explanation of the cowboy. And it was funny how Billy disappeared - but I really hate it when shows think they need to add a cute kid into the show. Married W/ Children tried that too, then axed the kid w/ no explanation also!

And although Tony was annoying towards the end, he also did a few things that actually made me laugh; whereas he really wasn't funny in the rest of the series. I don't know why, but that stupid puppet of himself was one big thing I remembered from watching the show as a kid & it still cracked me up :D

Obviously, Tony had to evolve and change as a character, I just think he evolved in the wrong direction! I agree he was annoying at the end of the show and the quality of the show itself declined. It was never the best written show to begin with, but it got even worse towards the end.

He got really goofy. And I agree it happened when he got the haircut. Too close a shave to the brain maybe. Although there were a few eps prior that set me off. Mostly the Billy eps. But "Seer of Love" really sticks out for me. I both love and hate that episode if that's at all possible. Just the fact that he bought Angela a seat cover for their "anniversary" irks the hell out of me. He got her special gifts in the years prior when they weren't together. That seat cover was just a stupid thing coming out of nowhere and utterly uncharacteristic of him. And "Misery" has to be the WORST. Poor Angela.

That fireman episode is one I cannot watch at all (lol!) He just became very childish and unattractive. I sometimes wonder why Angela didn't walk away from him. And don't get me started on the whole move to Iowa storyline. The Tony from season's past would not have left Angela. After all they went through to be together, that didn't make sense at all. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad they got together finally. It just took character assassination to have it happen and that's what sucks.

Why on earth he was written like this in the end is a mystery to me. There are some episodes from season's 7 and 8 I very much like (An Affair to Forget being one of my favorites for the simple reason I think it's one of Judith's best comedic performances from the entire series), but I prefer to only watch up til season 5 and 6 when Tony was still Tony. Normal.

They definitely sabotaged Tony's macho persona in the end - so many shows do that to the guys and it ruins the humor and the character.

Amen.

Unfortunately I agree. I still really liked his character and he had his good moments in the final seasons but he just wasnt the same as he was in the first 5 or 6 seasons.

I remember that I couldn't decide who my favourite adult character was at the beginning of the show (Tony, Angela or Mona) but by the end it definetly wasn't Tony.

It's a pity because he was such a likeable character. I cant exactly say what it was, but he just got slightly annoying. O well for a show that lasted as long as Who's the Boss? the characters stayed suprisingly consistent.
I dont know about anyone else but I loved Sam, Angela and Mona the whole way through and Jonathan never really did much but was still fun.

Normally when characters stay around for so long I get sick of them, but for the most part this didnt happen with WTB?

Tony Danza also became very difficult on the set.

Tony (Who's The Boss?)

Yeah this show did something in it's later years which I never understood. Or liked! They turned Tony into a raving jerk. He was always yelling, was jealous, and just did dumb things. What a depaeture from the nice, positive, fun loving guy we had for most of the series. Now there was trouble on this show that final season, apparently Danza had a temper in real life, so maybe that is where this comes from. Like Julia Louis Dreyfuss maybe Danza took his aggravation out on the character. Or maybe it was bad writing since the show was pretty much done at that point. But I will never understand why Tony turned into such a jerk in those episodes. Though to be fair, the final season was a lot better than the final season of Growing Pains. But, that's another article.

For a big tough guy he WHINED all the damn time. I hated that.

Yes, he went from a macho guy from Brooklyn, to a Whiny yuppie in the Connecticut suburbs.
