I posted a comment mentioning what Alyssa said about herself having a "Conan phase" during an interview, and mentioned a "karate movie", (Double Dragon(1994), followed by EMBRACE OF THE VAMPIRE(1995) once she was "legal"), with WTB ending in 1992. According to her IMDB birthday, she would have been about 19 or 20 when that last season (8) was taped/filmed, so maybe she just delayed her weird-looking stage a bit, (maybe it was in her contract).
(BTW, very recently the "real reason" Shannon D. got booted from her series was revealed as having cut her hair, contrary to her contract, and that disrupted reshoots for portions of several episodes by causing continuity problems. It was rumored to have been due to her partying and "diva" behavior, but it was her haircut instead! Or, maybe "all of the above"...)
I did remember wondering about her in at least one episode, (her haircut and frumpy '40s and '50s look), and the CW network broadcast episode 8.02 the other day, and that was the very episode that made me wonder most. That is the episode when Angela and Tony ended up rolling the Jaguar into a lake, after Angela had turned down all of Tony's marriage proposals. Mona talked with Angela and she realized she was scared to accept, and maybe ruin a wonderful friendship, so she made up for it by proposing to Tony instead, and he played "hard to get" with the same reasons she used in refusing him, eventually accepting.
Toward the end of the episode, the whole "gang" was at the lake with the Jaguar still in the water; the police called the family, and a TV news reporter was there too. Sam (Alyssa) had her hair cut pretty short, (but not a "pixie cut", IMO, more like Dorothy Hamill the figure skater, but maybe shorter), wearing bluejeans and a white shirt, tied at the waist, not tucked. Why do I mention the shirt? It buttoned left-over-right, the way a man's shirt does. And she appeared to be more muscular in that episode as well, with the sleeves of that shirt cut off.
Thinking about it now, that outfit resembled the famous "Rosie The Riveter" look, but instead with a man's white shirt, and a different colored bandana on her head.
As stray thoughts, in season one of the TV series CASTLE, Detective Kate Beckett (Stanna Katic) sometimes wore blouses/shirts that buttoned left-over-right, but I have not noticed that since season one. I wondered if that was supposed to make her seem "butch", and the writers changed their mind, or had made their point and moved on... OR, if for "artistic reasons", some of the scenes were reversed; Det. Beckett mostly appears wearing turtlenecks since then. Did that happen in WTB? I really wish there was a DVD set available so it would be easy to check.
