Red Leader: inspiration of Minions?

In the Season 3 episode "Red Leader", there is a character called minion, wearing blue overalls and wore a helmet with a light on it, which reminded me a lot of the Minions as seen in Despicable Me.

I wonder if this was what inspired them?

I thought of them as blue collar workers who got stepped on to get ahead. The writers could have been inspired by this episode.
