They should have cast Paul McGann...

...rather than the uncharismatic and bland Jason Connery in the role of Robert of Huntingdon. After the great turn from Praed it was something of a step down to have Connery in the role. As much as I nice guy I have heard he is (I attended a evening with Colin Baker in Glasgow who had worked with him on a couples of episodes of "Doctor Who") he just isn't a particularly good actor. McGann is a far superior actor with more screen presence, charm and charisma. I suspect Connery was only cast due to the link between father and son in that his old man played the part of an older Robin of Loxley in the big screen 70's take on the legend "Robin and Marian". Plus there was the potential name recognition that would have potentially drawn viewers to it. Series 3 was the weakest of the whole show not purely down to Connery but the writing had really begin to become stretched and lazy although his casting certainly did not help matters.

If you have access to the DVDs, the commentaries shed light onto the process and choice of Jason as Robert of Huntington.

Could have been worse, we could have had Neil Morrissey (shudders)
