Your memory is a lot like mine was. I had distinctly remembered the daily 'G.I. Joe' cartoon starting to air in 1984, but it did actually begin in 1985.

What you and I remember are the two mini-series that were aired in '83 & '84; both coming before the weekday cartoon.

The first was titled 'G.I. Joe: A real American hero' [AKA The M.A.S.S. device] and it aired in the Fall of 1983, about a year after the debut of the toy line.

The second was 'G.I. Joe: The revenge of Cobra' [AKA The Weather Dominator]. It aired a year later, in the Fall of 1984.

No, it was the series in '84 that I watched...the problem with IMDb is there are a lot of errors on the site; it took me years to get them to change the name & date of a Canadian TV show called Hillside -- they had it named by the American name: Fifteen. Heck, they even got "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" at the wrong date; as it came out in '87 and they've got it listed as '89. Wikipedia, there are a tonne of mistakes on that site.

Oh yeah there's no question that both sites have tons of errors, but I'm %99 sure that the copyright date on the end credits of season one of 'G.I. Joe' is 1985.

Nope -

1983 - The M.A.S.S. Device Mini-Series (5 episodes)
1984 - The Revenge of Cobra Mini-Series (5 episodes)
1985 - Season 1 (55 episodes)
1986 - Season 2 (30 episodes)
1987 - Movie

The two mini-series' are often lumped in with Season 1, but they originally aired well before the series went daily. Transformers, which aired in the same block, also went daily in 1985 with its second season (the first season was weekly in 1984). Check the original airdates on the recent DVD set for confirmation.

Transformers may have been weekly where you lived in '84, but we had it daily on WUTV 22 -- the station that would become FOX years later.

There was only 16 episodes in 1984, several of which didn't air until much later in the season. So you're telling me they aired a 16 episode cycle 5 days a week? That would be very unusual if it were true, since the typical minimum number of episodes required for daily syndication was 65 at the time, with anything less than that being shown weekly.

The series went daily in 1985, when they brought the total number of episodes up to 65 (the 16 eps from Season 1, plus the 49 eps from Season 2). Sure you're not thinking of the 1985 Season? It was shown on WUTV 29 in my area, a Buffalo station that also later became a Fox affiliate.

Are you trying to troll here? Bill & Ted didn't come out in 87; it was 89.

reply

No, it wasn't '89, why I know this because the group home I was living at wouldn't let me off the property, however the group home when I saw B&TEA in '87 I'd go to the Fairview Mall theatre and saw it about 3 or 4 times, different group home different rules. Next time I am in Montreal, I am going to go to the Gazette and look up their microfiche from that time and get the ad for the movie.

Yea; I'll be waiting on pins and needles for that one. Face it man, you're wrong.

Real quick, the movie has songs on the soundtrack that weren't released until 1989, I think that pretty much proves it wasn't released 2 years earlier.

Bill & Ted actually came out in 1988, hence the "San Dimas, 1988" title card in the beginning of the movie itself.

reply

Whoever said Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure came out in '87 dont know what the hell they're talkin about! Bill and Ted came out in 1989 and I clearly remember seeing commercials for it in '89. The sequel was released in 1991.

I coulda swore the device Cobra used in the miniseries was called "The Weatherizer"?

I actually remember seeing an episode or two of G.I. Joe around '90 or '91. It's hard to believe it would have had reruns for that long; although, I remember seeing it before my brothers went to school around 6:30 or 7:00 AM.

riflemanm16a2 you may have been watching the Dic version of the series [Hasbro decided to take the property to Dic because they cut them a more profitable deal than Sunbow]. I believe the Dic incarnation ran from '89-'91, so that fits your time-line.

Keep in mind it was quite different than the Sunbow version, using cheaper animation and different voice actors. And it had a totally different theme song as well.

Although like the Sunbow GI Joe, the DiC version started with a five part miniseries that had a different theme tume (more like the Sunbox one)

The GI Joe Sunbow episodes were included in the DIC package and reran through 92 (maybe 93) in syndication and then moved over to Cartoon Express on USA which ran until at least 94.

All episodes opened with the DIC theme, though.
