GI Joe/Lovecraft Connection

I was watching the episode "Skeleton in the Closet" when a scene where Lady Jane is dangled over an octopus-like creature in a well reminded me in an uncanny manner of a scene from the movie Dagon, based on an HP Lovecraft story. Later I read on Wikipedia that the background story for Cobra-La borrows from Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. Is this connection between Lovecraftian ideas and GI Joe that documented? Have the creators of the cartoon made any comment on this?

I'm almost certain that I remember writer Ron Friedman discussing Lovecraftian influence on at least G.I. Joe: The Movie.
