Was GI JOE DIC Series any good?

Was the GI Joe/Action Force series made by DIC that took place after the events of GI JOE The Movie any good?
I of course loved the original Sunbow series but the DIC series was never aired in England or released on VHS.

Personally, I'd say no. It's written for a much(much, much, much) younger audience than the original series and the lapses in basic logic are astounding. Visually it's a mess as well, which is in line with DIC's "Do It Cheap" reputation it had back then. It's no surprise G.I.Joe died after that show.

Edit: Fixing typos years later. ;)

Agreed. It's a huge step back from the Sunbow series IMO.

I finaly got to see the DIC series recently as someone uploaded it onto Youtube. The opening mini series Operation Dragonfire was ok but I agree that the episodes that followed were really bad and aimed at really young children.

So it's treason then!

I do love the theme song though.

I liked it. The animation isn't as strong, and it's quite a bit heavier on the comedy, but it's still a fun show. I always thought the Sunbow show was just as silly, really. I like them both for what they are. Besides, both of them feature Chris Latta/Collins, so they're equally essential.

I hadn't watched it in several years, but I got curious so I checked out the first season from the library and just watched the first episode of "Operation: Dragonfire".

- There's a pretty significant step back in the quality of the animation from the Sunbow series, but if you squint it does keep the same basic aesthetic.

- Additionally, the music and sound f/x are also inferior. The "Operation: Dragonfire" mini-series doesn't use the "Get tough" opening, but instead a re-worked version of the original that replaces "A Real American Hero" with "An international Hero", similar to the Action Force series (A heavily re-worked version of ARAH released outside of the U.S.).

- A few of the voice actors from the Sunbow series return, but the cast is mostly new and utterly bland.

- It's only one episode, but the writing lacks the snap and pizzaz of the Sunbow series. Sure the latter could be silly, but it was always fun and high energy with wit on display in even its more ludicrous episodes.

Overall it was even worse than I remembered. it just doesn't feel like G.I. Joe to me. I doubt I'll even bother finishing "Operation: Dragonfire" before I return it.

He went to Bespin Luke Skywalker, but he left Hand Solo

And I didn't. I wanted to get a sense of the DIC series and my curiosity was satisfied. Maybe one of these days I'll see if someone has put together a "best of" list from the DIC series and give those episodes a try.

If you have Roku (and possibly others) there is a Hasbro; Free Channel which has a healthy selection so you can check it out with no investment other than Time

reply

Yeah, time is the biggest hold up, as I got the DVD el freebo from the library. My friend and I write a blog together where we review short-lived cartoons and TV shows that often turn out to be awful, which is why I think I'm hesitant to invest any additional time on dodgy-looking cartoons and movies of late. But thanks for the heads up.

It sucked. I was 12 when it came out & my friends & I were all highly disappointed with it. The animation was so weak compared to the Sunbow series & the stories were just goofy & not in a good way, just dumbed down. The only selling point were seeing some newer characters, but they couldn't save it & we all wondered where all the other Joes & Cobras were.

No.

The DiC series sucked so bad. Coming off the major high that was the movie, DiC totally dropped the ball. The animation was bad, the colors were too bright in some instances. New characters immediately replaced old favorites while only a handful of the mainstays from the original series appeared infrequently. They also had a really bad new theme song.

When theres no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.
