Major Bludd question.

What was up with his arm? Was it just armor, was it supposed to be robotic? I don't remember it being described anywhere, like his file card, the cartoon, or the comic. Always kind of drove me crazy.

reply

It's never touched on in the original cartoon or the comics, but most speculate that it was originally meant to be a cybernetic arm. I believe some later comics have since included a story or references to it being an artificial limb of some sort.

As a kid I assumed it was supposed to be some sort of wrist-rocket or gauntlet type of deal.

I have the whole original Marvel series, but none of the later comics from Devil's Due or IDW, so I never knew if they touched on it. I always thought (or wanted to think) it was bionic, but that seemed unusual for GI Joe.

Yeah, a robotic/cybernetic arm seems just a bit fantastical for the very early era of ARAH, but it quickly got away from the slightly heightened reality aspect real quick. By '87 it had totally moved into the sci-fi realm.

Checking Bludd's Wiki, it said that the explanation for the arm came in one of the later runs (DD or IDW), but it wasn't sourced so I'm not sure if it's accurate or not.

From the figure designer himself, Ron Rudat:

Just scroll down to the Figure Commentary section and hit play on the audio commentary for Major Bludd to hear Ron explain it was supposed to be a cybernetic arm.
