I would,ve loved to have seen a third series.I know they brought it back in 2002,but as far as I,m concerned the later ones were a spin off not true Auf Wiedersehn Pet.I mean the third series that was going to happen if Gary Holton hadn,t have died.Apparently it was going to start with them working on the British Embassy in Africa and then halfway through they were going to go work in Russia. What a huge dissapointment.Three series of 80,s Aufpet would have been bliss. It,s always frustrating when the spanish episodes finish, with no explanation of what happened. The third series would,ve explained Ally Fraser,s comeuppance.
It would have been good, but even so, series two was weaker than series one. I would have liked to see them work in the Gulf or out in Hong Kong, but that would be stretching the budget.
Mind you, you're forgetting "Educating Oz", which was a special made in the period. Where can you get hold of that?
nephihaha, your right series two was a bit weaker than series one,but I still love them both. Series two suffered a bit, like Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais admitted, from the lads not been quite stuck together enough, especially in the spanish episodes. And a couple of lovers tagging along, which spoilt it a little. It was made three years after the original and they contrived it a little to get the ball rolling, but I think series three would have been strong, because it would have been made straight away and got them stuck together again right from the off. As regards Educating Oz,I,ve never seen it,but in these politically correct times,I can,t imagine them releasing it on dvd.You should be able to download it from the internet somewhere.
The third series wouldn,t have had Ally in it,I just said the lads would have mentioned what happened to him in Spain,at the beginning of the next series.
And as for most of them been paired off, that wouldn,t have been a problem. Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais would,ve started it with them working in Africa, tying up loose ends and getting rid of as many lovers as they could because they said themselves the gang were best when they were desperate and miserable, then they were going to go work in Moscow.
There would have been no reason to have Vicki in it,Oz just saw her as a bit of a fumble, and she liked the good life anyway,Hazel wouldn,t have stayed with Barry, she never seemed to know what she wanted,Brenda would have been back in the UK for her job and the kid,and Dennis hadn,t been with his girlfriend for long, that could have fallen through. She was only in the spanish ones because the actress is Kevin Whately,s wife.
I think it would have worked straight away.It was definetly going to happen had Gary Holton have lived.Clement and La Frenais both said that series two was bit too lighter than series one and the Spanish location was too luxurious,so with the Moscow setting they,d have give it more of the Germany flavour.
Funny thing is,they obviously used some of these left over ideas for some material in the later ones.
I see what your saying about the reversal situation. But I could never really enjoy the plots of the later ones, partly because it was so many years later, but mainly because the pace was too quick and there were too many stories, alot of them far fetched.
To me,80,s Aufpet was alot funnier, whilst keeping it,s realism and even though it moved at a slower pace, that made it more enjoyable.
A third 80s series was mooted definitely and it was going to have the lads in Moscow. I so much would've loved that but seeing as though Gary had died while filming the second series then by the thime the second series aired in Feb- May 1986 I already knew a 3rd series would be pointless.
Back in those days I kept thinking they could replace Gary and have another similar looking actor playing Wayne (someone like John Altman who was playing Nick Cotton in EastEnders at the time, not that I wanted Altman, just someone similar to Gary). But I knew the actor playing Wayne would have to be identical and sound like Gary to a tee to make me happy, lol. I knew I would never like it if they went ahead and made a 3rd and I still didn't in 2001 as much as I longed for the show to return over the years. It was great to see the other 6 together, no doubt about it.
Interestingly Timothy Spall did an interview in Loaded magazine in the mid-90s and they asked him about Gary and his death and the possibility of a 3rd series and I remember Spall saying Gary was a good guy,and that they were similar backgrounds but Spall was a South London boy and Gary was an East London boy but they all got on well and he was integral to the show, and that the show was a 7-header and if you removed one actor then it wouldn't be the same. I think for many years the other guys didn't want to make another series because they'd lost Gary.

Let's be honest, they should never have revived it after series 2. I'm rewatching them again on my yearly AWP marathon and series one is just streets ahead of series 2. It's damn near flawless television. Series two is great for many reasons, the obvious one being just the sheer joy of seeing them all back together again, and it has a first half that is as strong as series one imo, but sadly as soon as they move out of Thornley Manor and head to Spain it becomes dragged down with Neville's family and Dennis' girfriend, and Ally's bullying of Vicky, yawn. I enjoyed the third series and beyond for what they were, pure nostalgia, but my biggest gripe with them is the total annihilation of certain characters. Dennis & Oz being the main culprits. In series one and two Dennis really is the anchor man, a wise chap great at rallying the troops and sorting out people's problems. By the 'specials' he's turned into a completely different person, downbeat and weak in some respects. Castrated, if you like. Oz...well, utterly ridiculous. In series one he's the definition of a rough arsed gadgy. By the specials he's become some babe magnet with a good business head and a lot of the characteristics Dennis once possessed. Didn't work for me at all.
