Politicians make great Zeligs.

reply

Everyone does that to some extent. You speak to your teachers differently than you speak to your friends, for example.

As everyone knows, Marlon Brando was widely considered to be one of, if not THE, great actors of his generation. I read one of his rare magazine interviews in which he downgraded his own talent, and the acting profession as a whole, contending that acting is merely "behavior," and that practically EVERYONE "behaves" differently at different times depending upon whom they're with.

Everyone "acts" a certain way around their boss, but differently around their children, and yet another way with their own parents.

Certainly this is true of politicians. It could be reasonably argued that all successful politicians are good actors to some extent, because they need to engage thier "audience," be they national television viewers, a large crowd of constituents, an influencial business person, or a foreign head of state.

Woody Allen took this phenomenon to its humorous, touching, and satirical extreme in "Zelig." This is perhaps my favorite among his efforts.

I still think Hillary's performance at the church was funnier because she was not aware of how silly she looked. But later I think she looked at her performance and made the comment about a "multilingual president," so we could laugh with her.

Bill Maher noted that politicians will get out of a limo, walk 10 feet, and milk a cow on camera. He also said that a Democrat without a southern accent cannot be elected president (which has been true for 40 years). Who was the last non-southern Democrat president? JFK I think.

reply

You're right. Before JFK you have to go back to FDR to find a Yankee Democratic President.

Harry Truman (Missouri) is kind of in between. And didn't have a southern drawl. He wasn't elected in 1945 though -- he took office when FDR died.

Eisenhower didn't have a southern accent either. (DOH! we are talking about Democrats though)

The sound of Foghorn Leghorn will always be heard in Washington.
