Did they really shoot them?

Im watching this right now and wondering the same thing. It looked pretty realistic, usually you can tell when it looks fake but the way the dogs are falling after being "shot" looks pretty authentic. I now back then they weren't as strict with the way animals were treated in films, but I kinda doubt they'd be allowed to kill them on film.

No they didn't really shoot them. The director's commentary on the DVD states that they used trip wires to trip the dogs and blanks were fired. Pretty sure this is on the Spheeris commentary, or a read it somewhere else.

Yes that's true. In some scenes you can even see the wires if you pause the video.
