Hackman is utterly convincing as Col. Rhodes

Gene Hackman plays the disaffected former Marine Colonel Rhodes to the hilt in this classica paean to America's longest running -- and biggest grossing conspiracy theory: The MIA legend. Look for the little things that mean a lot. For example, when Hackman is zeroing a vintage WW2-era M1A1 Garand rifle, his steady aim and his firing position is textbook and above reproach. Of course this is not surprising, as Hackman was a former Marine himself from 1946 to 1949, and BRM (basic rifle marksmanship) is just one of the things that Marines never forget.

Hackman used an M1 Garand. An M1A1
is the paratrooper model of the M1
Carbine.

Still, a very good flick !

Carbine is NoWay near even easily confused with a Garand!!!

I think it was the designation that was confused, not the weapon. Iirc it was definitely a Garand in the movie.

The zeroing was an excellent scene in this film, a nice touch of realism. In far too many films the hero just picks a random weapon up and it shoots exactly where he aims. While this was in no way a realistic film, it did have nice touches like that, and when viewed as its intended (a piece of entertainment, not a documentary) its hard to beat :)

This definitely ranks in the top 10 of Gene Hackman's roles. It was one of those performances where you forget the actor and just get into the character.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

That's because Gene Hackman is an enormously talented actor. (Shame he's retired.) He can be convincing in almost any role.
