Kick The Can: 'You can't come with me, Leo...' --- uhm, why not??!

I've always wondered why in KTC when the Douglas Fairbanks boy sits in the window and Conroy begs him to:

"Take me with you, I wanna go too."

he answers:

"You can't come with me... You'll have to stay with yourself."

Uhm, why, if I may ask? Why can one man be a boy again and poor Mr. Conroy can't? How can the Fairbanks boy say such a thing? Is he suddenly in on the TZ magic like Mr. Bloom?

reply

I'm just guessing here, but maybe since Conroy didn't initially have faith in the game of kick the can, until he saw actual proof... the magic wouldn't be bestowed on him.

reply

OMG Christianity.

Starting to believe in everything once you're already fawked doesn't help you!

Anyhow, do note how when the ol' man kicks the can alone, the black guy says something like "he'll get it", as in "he will eventually understand". At that point I suspected that they didn't actually turn into kids, but were indeed just young in mind, and therefore seen in new light.

Very good, Louis. Short, but pointless.

Except when the lady comes into the room she scolds what she obviously she as a strange boy she doesn't know sitting on the window sill, and scares him away.

Please do not make negative comments about a film YOU NEVER SAW. It makes you look stupid.

I'm probably wrong. I didn't really understand this segment because of the ending, but maybe the Fairbanks boy was actually his ghost? And by saying "you can't come with me" was him saying he's dead and I don't know going to Heaven I guess? Conroy lived obviously.

I don't know. What happened in the original version?

I don't remember the ending of the original version, but as to this one, the boy who left, his adult version was missing. The nurses were asking if anyone knew what happened to him and where was he.

So did he just run away to die on the street or be picked up and sent to a foster home? Someone needs to make a sequel to this story.

The original episode ends with them all turning into children and running off. I prefer Spielbergs' version in that the old timers learn to have a young mind while staying their original age. I thought the one lady made a valid point when she says "I don't want to lose all the people I love again"-it reminds you that it's tough growing up, many wouldn't want to do it again-even if they had the chance.

No, after playing for a while, he fell into a life of turning tricks on Sunset Blvd. Kind of sad, but not totally unexpected.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

My take on this segment is exactly what the Wiki page has listed:

"That night, Mr. Bloom gathers the rest of the optimistic residents outside and plays the game, during which they are transformed into childhood versions of themselves. Although they are extremely ecstatic to be young again and engage in the activities they once enjoyed so long ago, they also realize that being young again means you not only experience the good aspects of life again but also the bad. They request to be old again, which Mr. Bloom grants to them. Leo Conroy witnesses one resident, Mr. Agee (Murray Matheson, who had a role in "Five Characters in Search of an Exit") that still remains young, and says that he wants to go with him before the boy runs off. Conroy realizes that he does not have to stop enjoying life because of his old age.
The segment ends with Mr. Bloom leaving to another retirement home, and Conroy outside happily kicking a can around the yard, having learned being young at heart is what really matters."

Mr. Agee was the only one who didn't want to be made old again and even though the young Mr. Agee says to Leo that he CAN'T come with him...I do think it was basically him telling him you don't have to BE young to enjoy life...being young at HEART is all that matters.
