John Landis.........

Should have gone to prison for Vic Morrow's death. It was clearly his fault.

Eventually, there will come a day when science acknowledges the supernatural

reply

It wasnt anyone fault, it was an freak accident. John Landis went to trail and he was proved innocent of any wrong doing...end of story. Its Sad to know that 3 people lost their live tho.

According to Outrageous Conduct: Art, Ego, and the Twilight Zone Case, crew members said that Landis repeatedly ignored warnings about the stunt going wrong. He also ordered the chopper pilot to stay in its position and fly lower despite the production manager giving the pilot orders to pull out because of imminent danger. Landis hired the children illegally and lied to their parents, telling them that there weren't going to be any explosions or dangerous stunts on set. He also instructed the children to hide from firefighters, paramedics and social workers when they saw them backstage. Stunt doubles refused to film the shot because they said it was too dangerous.

Also, Steven Spielberg, the film's producer and one of the other directors was sickened by the way the entire stunt was handled, and as a result broke off his friendship with Landis. The parents of the children also weren't told that there would be helicopters or explosions involved in the scene.

reply

Right. Landis violated all kinds of rules to get the shots he wanted. The fact that a California jury didn't convict him doesn't change that. Landis's celebrity, money and a great lawyer had a lot to do with him not being convicted of manslaughter.

reply

But then he would never have been able to make Trading Places, an absolute 1000% classic comedy movie with an epic morality tale starring the comedy cream of the day.

reply

Well, yes, he's a talented guy.

I still love a lot of Polanski's movies, so I can seperate the art from the artist.

reply

Could've easily had stunt doubles, dummies, rear projections or optic printer effects, nowadays just digitally put in helicopters and explosives, however some people who don't know any better feel there's better about having actors in explosive sets because it looks more real.

If you take the credit for the film when it goes well, then you must take the fall for when shit goes fatally wrong. Obviously Landis and Folsey Jr. didn’t want to deliberately harm anyone on set, but their negligence resulted in the death of 3 people.

So yes, it was someones’ fault, that someone being Landis and the producers. It should have landed on their shoulders but with enough money and a studio that was desperate to sweep it under the rug, he got away with it, at least legally.
