Such a horrible tragedy:(

Really terrible about the accident/deaths. Haunting just to think about it. Haunting to hear about it before seeing this film. Then I saw the film, enjoyed it, but thought... Wait a second. This is the movie I was told about with those disturbing deaths. Morrow was great - I thought funny. The entire movie was awesome... But it's so depressing to think about the lives lost and how. I think it haunts people.

I only saw TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE for the first time, last year.

I went to the site, but changed my mind before hitting play and clicked out. I dont think I would be able to stomach the reality.

It's not gory or bloody at all, just them in the water then a huge splash and they disappear.. It's quite miraculous in a bad way how the blades landed on them perfectly in that huge swamp location, at least they didn't suffer.

I was really enjoying that segment with Morrows, and almost wish that Vietnam scene was finished and the segment complete, but then again, I would have thought those explosions were too much even for a real war and chopper, and been disgusted kids were involved..

"I told you we shouldn't have shot Lt. Nedlemeyer" Haha great line.

Never minding the Faces of Death series...there's a clip of it in one of the Death Scenes (released by Nick Bougas) videos. I have the DVD versions so I think volumes 1 and 3 were switched release-wise from the VHS versions. But I'm pretty sure (on the DVDs) it's in either volume 2 or 3.

The entire explosion footage, the film footage with the kids, the alternate angles...meant only for the jurors and courtroom and somehow out now is here

It's been on YouTube for a while now. Watching it now makes you realize just how reckless they were shooting that scene. Having those huge explosions going off with a massive helicopter hovering above was just foolishly reckless. I just think that Landis was driven by a megalomania that made him want to take things to the next level without any consideration for the safety of the actors involved.

I saw part of it and I started sobbing.

I almost sent you a PM asking you if you've ever seen the video of his accident until I saw this post. I can't bring myself to watch it because I'd rather remember him with his head attached to his body. Kind of like I'd like to remember my dogs as dogs and not a pile of ashes in a box.

"Lord! It's a miracle! Man up and vanished like a fart in the wind!"

I caught part of it on YouTube but I didn't watch the whole thing. I can't.

I wish other people would remember him as a talented actor and for his many films and TV shows. I also wish they would show some respect and quit making crass remarks and so-called "jokes" about him.

I don't know how an actor of his caliber was relegated to roles that were beneath him. He was one of the best and should have been treated as such.

It's hard to picture how someone could die that way.

I enjoy watching him because he really lit up the screen.

I'm stuck in the Seventies and that ain't no jive.

How the hell did Landis get acquitted of involuntary manslaughter?! Did the DA have a pulse?

No, John just had a good lawyer, Harland Braun

Maybe, but definitely not two brain cells to rub together.

The only thing worse than watching the accident footage is watching it while tripping on LSD.

About 2 years ago, me and my roommates were tripping all night and were having fun watching different movies on Instant Netflix to keep us entertained. We came across the Twilight Zone movie, and someone said, "Why not?"

During the first segment, I recalled out loud that the actor playing the lead died in a helicopter crash while they were making the movie. Our acid brains wondered aloud if his segment was meant to end differently since he died during filming. So my friend with a laptop did some research while we were tripping/watching the movie. He typed in "Twilight Zone movie alternative ending", and a video popped up. We paused the actual movie and full screened the video and pressed play.

At first, it did seem like deleted footage. Shots of a burning village and children crying. This had to be it! But then we see poor Vic carrying these two children through waist deep water. In the video, he is obviously struggling to carry these 2 kids underneath the special effects, sluggishly trying to keep pace in such heavy water. And then they disappear. And then a wider shot, making the night set almost look like a very large room, the helicopter spinning out and crash landing on top of these smaller specks in the water.

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. I was *beep* up for days after watching that. I couldn't sleep, and I couldn't stop reading about the production/accident/court case. I even went on to Vic Morrow's forum and urged people not to watch the footage. Unfortunately, the only responses I got were along the lines of: "Censorship = WRONG" and "You don't get to tell ME what to watch!!!!"

So I will end this dreadful flashback that I will never be able to "un-see" with this advice: If you have any portion of a soul, or a conscience, don't watch the footage. Yes, I am aware of morbid curiosity and how it can get the best of us, but you will regret watching this. No matter how you rationalize it, the bottom line is: You are watching a video of one man and two children DYING. Not for a political cause or some greater sacrifice or awareness, but for a stupid movie.

It was irresponsible to have Vic Morrow do this shot without a double/stuntman.

It was even more irresponsible to have two children right in the middle of all these explosions, fire, water and huge machinery (helicopter).

It was pure insanity to have the helicopter and the actors in one take in front of the camera and urge the helicopter pilot to fly lower and lower. Was the helicopter supposed to be in the same frame with the actors, right above their heads or what intention did Landis have??

This makes me really sad. And its sad also, Spielberg and Landis got away with it. In my opionion, Spielberg is responsible also - he didn't supervise this production carefully enough. This scene, in the way it was shot, never should have been approved by any producer. It doesn't matter, if Spielberg was on location or not - if he wasn't, it was HIS fault!

Besides, Landis obviously was not qualified for this scene and the producers, including Spielberg, placed lives in danger by giving Landis full control of this scene.

In my opinion, Landis totally lost his mind, just to have an incredible scene on tape. He probably didn't even realize anymore, he was risking anybodies lives and was just focused on the scenery. People like that, should never direct a movie.
This is almost like killing somebody, just to have the opportunity to do a photography or painting of a dead body.
An artist, who forgets reality in his art, becomes danger.

And if it's all true, what Dick Peabody states about Landis' appearance and narcissistic remarks on Vic Morrow's funeral (http://www.jodavidsmeyer.com/combat/personnel/Peabodys_Place-4.html), this makes the whole story even worse!

R.I.P.!

Because stuntmen are what... not worth keeping as safe as the actors?

It was even more irresponsible to have two children right in the middle of all these explosions, fire, water and huge machinery (helicopter).

If Landis had been following relevant regulation, the kids wouldn't have been there (in the dark at least)... so maybe the pilot might have been more able to use visual clues to help control the helicopter. So yeah, maybe the accident would have been avoided entirely.

Also, I absolutely agree with everything else you say.

It was not Spielberg's fault. He didn't direct this episode. Landis was the Director of this episode. It was Landis, the First AD, and the Stunts/Special Effects leadman's fault. The stunt should never have been attempted. If you knew how the studio system worked, you'd know that Spielberg had nothing to do with this episode of the film.

I happen to know the guy who you responded to, and actually he has been working in film for a while. I was in one of his films when he was doing Film School at NC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, and furthermore he's about as big a Vic Morrow fan as a person can be.

I watched it online about a month ago and it still creeps me out.

Yeah, I saw the video, very very disturbing stuff. It's heartbreaking to actually someone, not just Vic Morrow but two young children die in such a horrible way.

It's still hard to comprehend even though it's been 31 years. Three lives cut tragically short because of Landis and every other *beep* who was responsible.

I have watched the video on YouTube and I started sobbing. It was the worst thing I have ever seen.
