My Review And Ratings (Spoilers)
As a whole, I wasn't too impressed with the movie. Maybe I'm too much of a purist or maybe it's because I read about the tragedy on set and that skewed my perception. But rather than review the movie as a whole, I'm going to go segment by segment.
Prologue: A nice intro honestly, even though I'm not a fan of Dan Aykroyd (liked him well enough in Ghostbusters, but not an actor I follow from movie to movie). And I love the twist of him being a monster. Plus, CCR! Can't go wrong there.
Segment #1 (Original story of a bigot who ends up facing racism from others): Honestly, this was kinda meh. And maybe I was influenced by what I read about the segment, but I feel that it would've been tighter if they had just stuck with one group to get the message across. Having him go from facing off Germans who chased him because he was American, the KKK who thought he was a black man, and U.S. Marines who fired on him because they thought he was Viet Cong seemed a bit too much like Quantum Leap. 1/5.
Segment #2 (Kick The Can): I actually rather liked this remake. I thought it was interesting how they turned into kids but still kept their adult mannerisms and most of them decided that they didn't want a do over because they wouldn't have the memories that they had already made. I thought it was a nice reference to the fact that our experiences shape us to who we grow up to be. I also liked that Ms. Cox (portrayed by Priscilla Pointer of whom I'm a fan) was more concerned about the residents in her care than the guy in the original. I give this a 3/5 since Conroy still lost his best friend who decided to stay a kid, but at least it wasn't as depressing as the original episode in which everyone became a kid again except him and his best friend didn't even recognize him.
Segment #3 (It's A Good Life): This was okay. I like the fact that they tried something different by portraying Anthony as being frustrated with his powers. However, I feel that they left too many things unanswered. For example, they mention that he wished away his biological family (or maybe hurt them, they weren't clear) with no explanation of what cause him to do so. A visual reference to this may have been nice. Also, I felt that this story worked well with Anthony being a devil child as portrayed in the original episode. I give this a 3/5 as well because I like that they tried a different direction.
Segment #4 (Terror At 20,000 Feet): This was just a straight up remake with different actors portraying the characters. And personally, not one of my favorites. I did like the fact that they brought back Dan Akroyd's character as the ambulance driver and they ended it with him asking the same question (do you want to see something really scary?) that he asked the guy he had gotten a ride from. This I would give a 2/5 because even though I'm not a fan of his, I think John Lithgow did well in the role of the passenger who sees the gremlin and tries to warn everyone.
As a whole I would give this movie a 3/5, not being so atrocious that one wouldn't enjoy themselves if this was their type of movie, but certainly not so great a person would want to add it to their collection. At least in my opinion.
I don't think more electricity is what this guy really needs. Just throwin' it out there.
