Wouldn't Winthorpe and Valentine also be in trouble
Isn't what they did illegal as well?
shareSure....but they didn't get caught. They also hauled ass after.
shareAt that time, it was not illegal.
There is actually the eddie murphy rule now to prohibit using insider knowledge to manipulate an artificial price.

Plus it's obvious the guys in charge were more than happy to pin it all on the Dukes.
shareNobody knew what they did, remember?
shareAmazingly, insider trading wasnt illegal at that time.
shareApparently, insider trading based upon a yet-to-be-released government finding was not illegal in 1983. And even if it was, the only people who might've had a hint as to what Winthorpe and Valentine did would be Randolph and Mortimer Duke. And what are they going to say? We hired a private detective to secrete the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's findings on orange harvests for this year before it was made public, but Winthorpe and Valentine secreted it from our detective and replaced it with a phony report. Even if it wasn't illegal then, nobody is going to side with the Dukes in a scenario like that.
