It's been decades since I saw this movie and it shook me up so much that I do not think that I could put myself through it again.

Dont forget the Beatles song that played at the end. Which is why the movie was held up for distro for so long.

That was a reference to the "Pied Piper of Hamlin" play that the children had performed earlier in the movie. In the play, the children had been taken away because the parents didnt deserve them.
Similarly, the residents of this town (fictional HAMLIN, California) have lost their children due to radiation. The mother (heartbreakingly played by Jane Alexander) is just quoting a line from the play. An expression of irony and the desire to be good enough to deserve the children back.
