I noticed this too, and if you think about it, this happened throughout the entire movie.
The main thing I noticed was how bright and sunny it was in the beginning, contrasted with the end of the film. The sun and lights flare the lens and the highlights are blown out intentionally as the father and son ride bikes. As the movie progresses, less and less light is seen, many scenes at night. Then in the end *SPOILERS* ......................................
the mother, son and Hiroshi (play on Hiroshima, obviously) are sitting around the table and we see them blow out the candles (light going out), then the film reel of the father's birthday and him blowing out the candles. All light is gone and we can really only assume they die.
Very well done.
