What's up with those town meetings? (possible spoiler)

I thought this film was well done in some ways, but at the town meeting one guy says he doesn't care about anything outside the town, he just wants he garbage taken on time. Another lady compares it to the JFK assassination. Are these people aware of what just happened? This isn't a blackout, the world just ended! Anyway I thought those scenes were poorly done. Any thoughts?

For who would bear the whips and scorns of Hollywood... (;-p)

Some people are capable of existing in a state of denial than others and the man who wanted his garbage picked up couldn't see any obvious damage to the infrastructure yet so he perhaps thought life would go on as before. The woman recalls a time of national tragedy, but that everyone was able to just get on with their lives after a period of uncertainty. Maybe you envision yourself reacting in a different way, which makes their responses seem foreign to you. If you think about it, their responses may have been their way of coping with the devastating reality they were as yet incapable of comprehending.

Yeah, I agree with you. Most of the statements people made in the first town meeting were pretty f'g stupid. "Someone broke my plate glass window!" Oh, you poor schmuck.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

But that "schmuck" making that comment is what would happen! People in general can't see outside of their own lives, I'm certainly guilty of that. My complaint in a town meeting would be "When are we going to have movies again?". 

When people are shocked or stunned by a traumatic event, they often do or say things that don't make sense. Their minds are not processing much information right. These scenes were accurate of how such people act.
