"Nuclear war in the United States is portrayed in a realistic and believable manner".
Erm.... WTF !!!!!?
What an absolute pile of unadulterated sappy rubbish. I wasn't expecting the day after' or threads, or even the stand but I didn't expect 'the waltons at war' either. Reading the board and looking at the rating I'm totally baffled.
If you're looking for good post apocolyptic dramas, this is one to avoid. Thanks, little rant over with there.

I didn't think it was that bad. If there was ever a nuclear war, it could easily have looked like that for SOME areas. That doesn't mean it would have looked like that for ALL areas. The US is a big country, and things could have been drastically different from one place to another.
Mate this is TERRIBLE. I cant even amass the words to describe just how terrible it is. I don't want to go to the effort. I don’t even understand why it's apocalyptic based, I think that's just used as a platform for the ensuing mawkish 80's tosh.
Yeah, sorry I expected the END OF CIVILIZATION to include horror!
I suppose a little realism and creativity would stifle this masterpiece. No need for an actual full scale nuclear winter (instead of a few trees dying). No need for firestorms on the outskirts, spreading fallout survivors from neighbouring towns looting / killing. No need for cannibalism, disease, rape and murder. The depiction of a school play going on as normal, littered streets with a little bit of water contamination had so much more impact .... because it just was! Pure understated arthouse. They kept it simple, genius.
This was not a brilliant movie, it was low budget made-for-tv-primetime crap.
Yes, although the film was moving, it could have been more realistic in a "techie-science" sense, even if putting that kind of data in the story might have been viewed as a bit too distracting or anal retentive. It wasn't as smarmy as "A Walton's Nuclear Winter", but a little more emphasis on the actual widespread effects of massive nuking, and what its effects would be on the rest of the state/country/Canada, Central America/the world wouldn't have hurt...

Listen, I had a lump in my throat watching 'Marley and me' but the best this drama was capable of moving me, was practically putting me into a coma.

As for nuclear winter, that was pretty much debunked back in 1986, so in a way Testament was correct: "Two researchers, Starley Thompson and Stephen Schneider, debunked the nuclear winter hypothesis in the summer 1986 issue of Foreign Affairs. Thompson and Schneider stated: "the global apocalyptic conclusions of the initial nuclear winter hypothesis can now be relegated to a vanishingly low level of probability."
Like it or not, the premise of the film was that some places would be unaffected by direct blast effect, but everyone would die anyway.
Maybe it was realistic -- maybe some portions of humanity will not go out with a bang, but with a whimper.

I'm no expert on mutually assured destruction but I'm fairly confident with the worlds arsenal, a nuclear winter seems like a realistic possibility. Thank you for the info, I'll check it out
From this info here (http://www.wnd.com/1999/05/6341/) I'm thinking nuclear winter would be a distinct possibility in an island nation like the UK. United States, not so much. It would depend on the number of weapons, the time of year the blasts occurred, and whether they were air or ground bursts. Seems to me if you wanted to wreck a country, it would make sense to forego the city-busting altogether, use EMP weapons and destroy everyone's electronic capabilities for a while. You could destroy billions of dollars worth of electronics with weapons worth at most a few million.

Try being around people who are undergoing a traumatic event. You will see how this movie was not at all sappy rubbish. Also try watching a movie as you should, which is to get involved with the characters and feel the things they are feeling.
"Do All Things For God's Glory"-1 Corinthians 10:31 I try doing this with my posts
