I enjoyed both equally, but for some reason... I can only watch SNF a few times every so often whereas I can watch Staying Alive like a hundred times over. I don't even know why. :)
shareSaturday Night Fever is the best. Staying Alive was a complete disappointment. It's not even worthy to be compared to Saturday Night Fever...IMO.

Saturday Night Fever, hands down, no question about it. It had a much better storyline, more electrifying dancing and a deeper plot, in my opinion.

This is a trick question Right ? I mean you have to ask which was better
come on for real!
Staying Alive was okay in some ways, but is nowhere near Saturday Night
Fever.
I say Staying Alive. Ooooooooooooooooooooooh, contraversial!
sharestaying is much better watched it 100 of times nver could watch saturday night fever in one sitting
shareI agree with the majority, SNF was a good forgettable cheesy fun film whereas Staying Alive offered much more soul and heart into the characters and story, music is much better accompanie as well and quite honestly let's admit the fact that Stallone as a director is much better than Badham ever was. J.Badham was always just a little one trick pony, nothing more. Look what Sly has made as a director, classic after classic. SA is a real film, not just a crowd-pleaser like was SNF.
shareI think they matched each other pretty well. It really is the same movie continuing on. That some call one great and the other a let down amazes me. The mood, the characters, the downbeat approach, the natural humor, is right on the money in this sequel.
Roger Ebert praises the first and isn't phased by what he calls (something like) "wall-to-wall music." For '83's "Staying Alive," with MTV well established, he has a snobby attitude to what is now, in his eyes, an MTV movie. Possibly there is more music, but considering the success of The Bee Gees first soundtrack, that's only natural, for crying out loud!
Ebert also complains that the sequel has no plot. A charge that could equally be thrown at the first movie if anybody wanted to. In fact, the sequel is more layered than the first, something Ebert misses on every point. He doesn't mention the family dynamic at all, missing the crucial family story-line between the idealised brother, the priest, and the wastrel Travolta.
The priest's call from grace, his inability to live up to his parents dreams, and the redemption of Travolta, by chasing his own dreams via 'Satan's Alley,' (the whole metaphor of this cheesy eighties stage show is also completely missed by Ebert), which could also be called, 'New York City,' 'the mean streets,' or 'the real world,' IS the underlying storyline, the point, and the message of this movie. TOTALLY MISSED by most critics.
But don't miss this:

shareGreat comments "patbrien"! I also think alot of people dismiss the sequel because Tony Manero is at times a very unlikeable and unsympathetic character, someone who's ideals and values in regards to relationships have been overtaken by the desire to "reach the top", a very 80's theme! Fans of the first film may feel betrayed by this character turnaround.
Both as good as eachother!!

I LOVE "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" and could watch it just about every weekend.
There is so much to it from the story to the characters to how it personally reminds me of that time.
CLASSIC.
Staying Alive: What an embarassing disappointment! I hate that it's even supposed to be about Tony Manero. The music is that '80's gawd-awful nonsense and the acting is bush league. Stallone made this all about himself and made sure he wizzed all over it.
The only part that I did like was when he went back to Bay Ridge. THAT should have been so much more of the movie and I have no idea why Stallone was afraid to involve The Faces or other familiar characters.
I suppose we should just be glad he didn't bring in Mr. T or Hulk Hogan.
As an overall FILM.....SNF. I has it all! Everything just gelled, it was just magic....that happens once in a great while.
However I love to watch both equally.....I have both dvds and it's great to kick back and watch them back to back when I have block of time alone (hubby's not into it) HIS LOSS LOL!
