I know the feeling about wanting to recreate a blockbuster, but those attempts usually end up being boring.
Because the end of Saturday Night Fever was Tony Manero leaving Brooklyn, this movie showed him at the next stage of his life. Having him do the second movie completely in Brooklyn would have been a let down of the character. No mater what, Tony can't escape Brooklyn.
If you had him in New York, and then come back to Brooklyn as a conquering hero, that might work. This movie has him bridging the two worlds which I liked. Tony shows some growth as a character, and as a person. If they had done a 3rd movie, maybe they could have shown Tony coming back to Brooklyn, and opening up a bar or a dance studio or something.
