Dancers lighting up cigarettes during opening credits

Why on Earth would a professional dancer smoke cigarettes?

What would Sgt. Saunders do?

To stay thin. That time period was all about using things like smoking, drinking,drugs, things most would never do today.

Just a different era everyone was smoking back then ,NHl players were smoking in the locker rooms between periods, smoking in airplanes it was everywere

It was the 80's. People smoked all the time.

Hell, look at Hollywood...can't eat meat, can't eat/drink dairy, but cocaine's all right.

I did when I was 17 to 20 and in a professional jazz dance school. Things were different back then.

The majority of professional dancers I know/knew used to smoke. And like other posters have said: it was to stay thin.
