Influence on Whedon for Firefly?

The style is strikingly similar and some of the plot elements seem pretty close. In the early scenes everyone treats the kid as an albatross on the ship and want to get rid of him until the captain takes him under his wing.

This is very similar to the relationship between Mal and River in Firefly. Combine that with the space cowboy feel, I can't help but think this might have been an inspiration for Whedon.

I'm just watching this for the first time in years and thinking the same.
Apart from 'Serenity' they don't really make films like this anymore.

Serenity could be an updated version of Space Raiders.

Just been watching Space Raiders on YouTube. Not bad. It was like Serenity. Hawk and his crew of space pirates were soldiers. Very sad at the end. I wonder if Ali Baba and his 40 Thieves could had been a possible influence.

Joss Whedon dosent have an original bone in his body.

Buffy= Gender flipped Spider-Man

Angel= Forever Knight/Highlander

Firefly/Serenity= Battle Beyond the Stars/Space Raiders

Dollhouse= La femme Nikita

The biggest influence on Firefly is unquestionably the late seventies British sci-fi series Blakes 7.
