Why did Tony tell immigration his mother was dead?

I mean if he told them she was in Miami wouldn't that help his asylum claim? I
guess because he didn't want HER to know since they'd probably contact her. I guess he didn't trust her fearing she'd tell them what he really was.
However a totally legit mother and sister would have helped aside from that possibility.

Because Tony wanted to make it on his own steam and not come back to his mother and sister until after he had "made good" and returned as a conqueror hero throwing money around.

I'd guess he didn't want them to locate her and hear what she had to say about him.

His mother wouldn’t vouch for him. She scorned him.

say he gives them his mother’s name and address: they contact her, and she’d tell them that he’s no good.
