how... the *beep* was pacino not nominated?

Silly or not, that is one hell of a performance. Pacino for sure has deserved 3 oscar wins for: Dog Day Afternoon, Godfather, and Scarface.

Those 3 are landmark performances that are completely distinct. He got basically what is an honorary Oscar for Scent of a Woman which isn't a remarkable film apart from him. How he did not get nominated for Scarface is unbelievable.

Yeah this guy pretty much said it. All the standard Hollywood awards are a joke. 99% of the time it's just ridiculously rich people rewarding their friends for some unoriginal movie. Few times where actual good acting and obvious hard work put into a film is rewarded.
Not just millions thrown at a pile of crap to make it look pretty.

Well he didn't exactly demonstrate range in this, and honestly his Cuban accent was pretty bad. It sounded more like had marbles in his mouth the whole time.

I disagree he most definitely deserved an award for this movie. He won for scent of a woman, but the godfather, serpico, Scarface, dog day afternoon, even lefty in Donnie Brasco were all even more iconic in my opinion. To say he didn't exactly show range in Scarface is a ridiculous statement. The guy is from New York playing a Cuban gangster with nothing coming to the US & becoming the boss. I can count the actors on one hand who could have pulled that role off and made it as epic as he did. It was risky as hell for both him and De Palma. It could have been a dud but is one of the most beloved and quoted gangster movies of all time. You hear people's Tony Montana impressions all the time you focking cockaroach! But HAY! I was only kidding! seriously though he was stellar in this movie.

Not for The Godfather as Brando was better and even Pacino says that Brando is better than him.

He is very hammy in Scarface, very unlike his subtle performances in the 70s

reply

Lol, you haven't really watched his 70s films close enough it seems. Pacino is a theatre actor unlike De Niro and his style has been consistent since his very first film.

Tony Montana's much too large for the small mind of Oscar to handle.

And, of course, there's considerably more to Pacino's performance here than mere swagger.

His character was too often cartoonish.
